Init40 | Every Journey Starts with a First Try
In programming, init is where everything starts.
For Chosfox, it all started with 40% keyboards.
From ortholinear to column stagger, we kept exploring new possibilities.
Then came a new question:
“What about Row Stagger?”
That’s how Init40 was born.
Init40 stands for Initialization and Initial Attempt.
Because every journey starts with a first try.
We are in the process of obtaining TELEC certification

A Different 40%, A More Natural Layout
A 40% keyboard gives you fewer keys and more freedom.
Init40’s Row Stagger layout offsets each row to better follow the natural movement.
A familiar typing feel.
An easier way to start with 40%.
Compact 40%. Natural movement.
Less keys. More desk space.
A new way to experience 40%.

Layered Lighting, Crafted for Every Angle
More than just an indicator, the layer light makes your current layer easy to recognize at a glance.
A subtle light comes alive when you switch layers, giving you an instant visual cue without interrupting your typing flow.
Switch layers. See the change.
Stay in control.
A small light, a clearer workflow.

Ready to Go
A simple strap, made for life on the go.
The integrated strap makes Init40 easier to grab, carry, and take anywhere. From your desk to your next destination, it’s always ready to go.

5° Typing Angle
A Gentle Angle, A More Natural Feel
A carefully tuned 5° typing angle creates a subtle height difference between the front and back, giving your hands a more natural position while keeping the keyboard low and comfortable.
Not too steep. Not completely flat. Just right.
5° ergonomic tilt for a more natural typing posture
Low-profile design keeps your hands close to the desk
Balanced comfort for everyday typing sessions
Designed for a smoother, more relaxed feel

Boat-style case
The boat-style chassis creates a smoother and more sculpted side profile, giving the keyboard a lighter visual presence while enhancing the premium feel of the aluminum body.
With an optimized acoustic design for an improved typing feel and enhanced anti-static protection for safer everyday use, Init40 delivers a more refined and reliable experience overall.

Support VIAL and Tri-mode connectivity

Switches
Init40 offers 4 different Kailh Choc V2 switch options, covering both linear and tactile styles.
You can choose freely based on your typing preference—whether you prefer a smooth, uninterrupted linear feel, or a more responsive tactile feedback.
Whether you're looking for quiet smoothness or clear keypress confirmation, there’s now a switch that better fits your style.

I’ve collected a lot of mechanical keyboards over the years and this is my first 40% keyboard. Am still learning how to get efficient with it but the excellent feel and ergonomics make the experience a frictionless pleasure. My only real nit to pick is that there are no shine-through keycaps of the same design to choose from. The original keycaps are part of the Init40’s charm so I don’t want to switch to a generic set.
The Init40 is one of the most approachable 40% keyboards I’ve come across. The familiar row-staggered layout makes the transition from a normal keyboard much smoother than ortholinear boards, while the CNC aluminum case feels solid and premium. It’s genuinely portable (with a nice carrying case and strap), supports tri-mode connectivity with a solid battery, and the typing experience is better than expected for a low-profile 40%—good acoustics, properly tuned stabilizers, a comfortable 5° angle, and a split spacebar that actually works well. VIAL support and layer lighting also make the heavy layer use more manageable.
What I like:
Excellent build quality and minimalist design
Easier entry into 40% thanks to the staggered layout
Strong portability and accessories
Flexible switches, hot-swap, and good wireless performance
Areas I’d like to see improved:
It’s heavier than it looks (~475g), which slightly undercuts the “throw in a bag” convenience
US layout only (a limitation for JIS users)
Stock keycaps hide most of the RGB—a shine-through option would be welcome
A lighter linear switch option would suit more people
The 40% format still has a real learning curve for layers, which limits who will actually enjoy it long-term
Overall, it’s a well-executed “first try” at a more approachable 40% low-profile board. Great for writing or travel if you’re willing to adapt to layers; less ideal as a main keyboard for coding or gaming.
I love this keyboard.
Typing feeling is awesome and silent (Deep Sea Linear switches) and configuration is simple while offering many options.
The design and form factor is excellent, even though I would have not bet on usability given the size. But it is definitely a great everyday companion. I was used to keyboard layouts with dead keys, so adopting layers was not a disruption for me.
I have two quality control issues though. The u key is tilted and not in full alignment with the rest of the keys.
Visual impediment that does not hinder usability but still not expected.
The second defect is my keyboard unit is wobbly. It rocks from front to back when typing as it seems the lower right corner is not even with the rest of the chassis.
My first 40% keyboard. Got the Silent Tactile Switches, typing experience is great and the build quality in general is very solid. Including a hard shell carrying case as an add on was one of the major selling points for me.
A great keyboard for people that want to start using smaller keyboards. It has a traditional layout, so it's a good stepping stone before going towards ortholinear.
